Thrash/Speed Metal from U.S.S.R (Soviet Era Russia)

JustDave's Notes:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to add a fade in/fade out at the beginning and end respectively. I also edited track marks and doubled the volume. No EQ or Noise Reduction was used, no remastering or remixing was done. The DVD had audio that was lossy so I encoded the waves to MP3 320kbps using Trader's Little Helper, sector boundaries were aligned.

Круиз (Kruiz) was one of the State Allowed Bands in Soviet Era U.S.S.R. The went through more than one state allowed musical direction too, while using the same name. Their first was as a Soft Pop/Rock band in the early 1980s. The U.S.S.R. revoked the bands license to be a band during a brief time western music became banned again. When they could reform it was as a Speed/Thrash Metal band after hearing smuggled American Thrash records. The last incarnation was as a Grunge band sounding a lot like Stone Temple Pilots.

This recording comes from my favorite era of the band, The Speed/Thrash Metal era (of course). Круиз (Kruiz) had a fresh take on Speed/Thrash Metal, maybe due to their Pop Rock sense of melody. I actually didn't hear of them till recently when I had said to a friend that Heavy Metal had started to get stale for me and I had to move on to Acid Jazz or Free Form Improvisational Jazz or even Drone/Noise Music to find something challenging. He gave me the name of some bands he liked that I had to research to find. They were from Ukraine, and when looking on a Russian torrent tracker for them I found Круиз (Kruiz). I loved them upon first listen, I then found out only a small amount of the extensive catalog I had downloaded was of the Metal variety I loved. So I deleted what I didn't like.

So there is a long, long set of notes that comes with this series of Mike Millard's Master recordings. I mean Ben Hur long...I am not going to copy them and I won't ramble as long as I have on other posts today either. I will say collectors know the Mike Millard audience recordings are actually always a great listen. I don't share many audience recordings, I only share recordings I will listen to repeatedly. So yeah this ones pretty great...

two minor flaws, possibly of on-stage origin, neither during the music:

Grace Slick - vocals
Mickey Thomas - vocals
Paul Kantner - guitar, vocals
Craig Chaquico - lead guitar
Pete Sears - bass
Aynsley Dunbar - drums
David Freiberg - keyboards

One of Rosebud's favorite female lead vocalists. She has a respectable amount of Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and Starship stuff. I can go with almost all of it, but when it became Starship (without Paul Kantner) I lost interest. I had hoped for a continuation of Freedom At Point Zero's Hard Rock but that was not to be. I really love this performance. It includes material like "Fast Buck Freddy", "Rock 'n' Roll Is Good Time Music", "Jane" (a personal fave of mine) and "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" (a freakin' great song). The sound is pretty good as well, there are a few flaws already pointed out above. Enjoy Everyone, Rosebud did pick another great  one!

JustDave's Notes:
I ripped the audio with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to edit some of the track marks and add the fades as needed at the beginning and end of the show. No EQ or Noise Reduction was used. No remixing or remastering done. The DVD had lossy audio so I encoded the waves to MP3 320kbps aligning all sector boundaries, using Trader's Little Helper.

The sound of this DVD is pretty good for being a TV recording. Instruments are pretty clear in the mix, from the cymbals to the lows of the bass. Not to low as to muddy up the mix either, just right to make the sub woofer go bump.

I am a huge fan of Nazareth, Dan McCafferty was such an inspiration to me. My Thrash band Psychosis, some of our early shows were opened with a hyper speed "Razamanaz" (think Slayer Reign in Blood era). It was in our set for a while till we gave into the play Metallica screams, then it was replaced by "Trapped Under Ice" ("they don't play it, we played it faster" he said with a snicker).

Sorry to only offer this in MP3 but the waves tested 100% MPEG so it's here in 320kbps. It's our first appearance on The New JustDave's Place for Patti Smith. It was recorded for King Biscuit Flower Hour. It has been bootlegged by many, this is the only copy I have so it will have to do. I loved Patti Smith's music, I bought a couple of her records by chance. It was through this add in a magazine that gave you like 6 records for a penny if you bought like 8 more at regular price in a certain amount of time. 2 of them I ordered was The Patti Smith Group's Horses & Radio Ethiopia releases. I now own all her stuff, but her early records are my favorite.

A lot of my favorite memories are my parents reactions to some of the bands I watched on TV. One of my favorites is my Dad's reaction to seeing Gilda Radner spoof Patti Smith on Saturday Night Live. The character was Candy Slice when it was done my Dad said "Son they are just bad" and went to bed. I can't remember the real musical guest on that show but Gilda's spoof was great. Just as great as John Belushi spoofing Joe Cocker and Mark Blankfield spoofing Bruce Springsteen on the show Friday's!
