As one of The Big 4 Of Thrash Metal, Megadeth's influence on the genre of Heavy Metal is measurable by just listening to the bands that have followed in their wake. Megadeth was born in a fit of anger that would seemingly last Dave Mustaine a life time. Megadeth was formed to be a faster, heavier, meaner band than Metallica. The band was to be Dave Mustaine's revenge for being fired from Metallica just as the band was poised to record their debut album. The guys in Metallica sent him off with a bus ticket and his stuff. On the bus ride home Dave planned and formed the ideas that would drive Megadeth to Thrash Metal stardom. Metallica fans were thrilled to have both bands out there trying to one up each other in the game. Metal fans profited from this "feud" of course with some albums that are now considered gospel if you will to Metal Heads everywhere. I still hold Killing Is My Business .. And Business Is Good as one of my all time favorite Metal albums, when I heard it I said something to the effect of "He sounds so pissed, I love it!!!"

Simply put Black Sabbath was the first Heavy Metal band. All Metal Heads agree that Black Sabbath was the band that started it all. Ian Gillan has said that (to paraphrase) until Black Sabbath, everyone thought being heavy meant playing louder. Black Sabbath took the Blues Rock that the heavier bands such as Vanilla Fudge and Cream played and accented the punch of the rhythm, added lyrics that were full of darker imagery reflecting the world at that time and stripped the riff to it's core accenting the scream and wail of the guitar. Black Sabbath's music was a complete opposite to the Groovy Hippy everything is beautiful, daisy chains and and LSD dreams that was popular. Black Sabbath screamed about war, heroin, pollution, nightmares, and the meaningless existence of  the oppressed and downtrodden. Black Sabbath's music was so important to the development of the genre of Heavy Metal that their influence can be heard in every single band and sub-genre of Modern Heavy Metal.

This soundboard recording comes from just before Paranoid's release. The album was recorded and would be released in September in just 18 days. Ozzy still sings some  alternate lyrics to some of the songs from that album. The song Paranoid, not yet released as a single,  is used to open the set instead of close like in later years. The recording itself has been remastered and is a thoroughly enjoyable listen, so download and enjoy this piece of Heavy Metal history.

In my humble opinion Godsmack is one of the best Metal bands to come out of the Neo-Metal or Ozzfest Metal scene. Godsmack's consistently excellent live shows has won them fans the world over. Godsmack has sold well over 20 million records worldwide, not bad for a band that some dismissed as a Alice In Chains rip off.

The band plays None So Vile in it's entirety. Technical Death Metal band Cryptopsy formed in Montreal Canada in 1988. The bands fast yet technical riffs, the bass players popping and slapping as well as shredding, and Lord Worm's angry Rottweiler vocal style took the Death Metal scene by storm. The bands sophomore LP None So Vile released in 1996 is listed as #11 on the list of Top Death Metal Abums of All Time. The band has gone through many line up changes with drummer Flo Mounier being the only constant in the bands career.

This is a great performance with some surprises. The band includes "On The Way" a song from the original Armored Saint EP that hasn't been played in years. The next surprise is "Spineless" from Symbol Of Salvation which may have been played only once before, the band can't remember.

Early in their careers both Anthrax & Metallica wanted John Bush to be their front man. Anthrax came calling when they fired Neil Turbin after the Fist Full Of Metal album was released. Metallica called John Bush when James Hetfield felt he wanted to concentrate on playing guitar due to lack of confidence in his singing voice. Bush declined both offers because Armored Saint was gaining momentum. Later when Armored Saint was on hiatus, Anthrax fired vocalist Joey Belladonna and asked John Bush to join again. He accepted and that line up released 5 studio albums and 1 live album before Bush returned to Armored Saint and Belladonna returned to Anthrax.

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant deny having anything to do with the genre of Heavy Metal. The duo wouldn't even grant an interview for VH1's documentary, Heavy: The Story Of Metal. The representative that delivers the message stresses that Jimmy Page and Robert Plant say they were never a Metal band and have/want no connection to the genre. Despite the heavy denial (pun not intended) Led Zeppelin were very instrumental in the development of Heavy Metal. All it takes is one listen to some of the Traditional Metal and Hair Metal bands and the influence is very evident. The Power Ballad is every Metal Bands grab for a Top 10 Hit, the origin of The Power Ballad is debated but it can not be denied that Led Zeppelin II's "Thank You" is a strong contender for that spot. Robert Plant's over the top vocal style is also a huge influence on most of your Traditional Metal Singers, David Coverdale of Whitesnake and Jack Russell of Great White are perfect examples.

Accept never obtained the commercial success they deserved in The USA. Their biggest selling album in The States was Balls To The Wall, due in much part to the so called "Gay Metal" controversy. The lyrics of the album dealt with oppression and one of the worst cases of the times was the terrible treatment of Homosexuals. This is a subject that has always made instant controversy in The States from the religious right in our country. The controversy brought the attention of record buyers wanting to see what the fuss was about. The album peaked at #74 on the US Billboard charts. The follow up Metal Heart only hit #94 even though (or maybe because) it had a more commercial sound. In 1987 Udo Dirkschneider was fired from the band. Udo continued on as a solo artist and in a kind of bizarre show of support the members of Accept helped write the entire Animal House debut album by U.D.O. (I mean Black Sabbath didn't write Ozzy's solo debut Randy and Bob did)

Hanoi Rocks formed in Helsinki, Finland in 1979. Having formed before the early 1980's Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Explosion the band was accepted by Metal Heads everywhere in spite of their Glam image. The band cited influences as varied as Cheep Trick, The Police and The MC5 and their music showed it. Equal parts of Punk, Hard Rock and Pop were used to create the bands sound. Any Glam/Hair Metal band that followed, Motley Crue et al owe a great deal of debt to Hanoi Rocks when it comes to their image. The bands Glitter Glam was more influential than the Heroin Hooker Chic of The New York Dolls, although every Glam/Hair Band owes The Dolls just as well. After the Hair/Glam explosion Hanoi Rocks were never thrown in with "The Posers" by the "True Metal" fans.

Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley was killed in a drunk driving accident in Redondo Beach, California on December 8, 1984 at the age of 24. Motley Crue vocalist Vince Neil was driving when he lost control causing an accident which killed Razzle and seriously injured 2 others. Hanoi Rocks canceled all their tour dates except for two, January 3 and 4, 1985 Kulttuuritalo, Helsinki, Finland. These shows were broadcast live as "Europe A Go-Go". The shows were a Memorial To Razzle and the band would dedicate "Million Miles Away" to him each night. Former Clash drummer Terry Chimes filled in for Razzle and would be the bands drummer until their break up when Michael Monroe quit the group June 17, 1985.

Wishbone Ash's Twin Guitar Attack was a heavy influence on early Traditional Hard Rock and Heavy Metal bands. Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Def Leppard, and Iron Maiden all featured a Dual Lead Guitar line-ups attributed to the influence of Wishbone Ash. Granted Wishbone Ash's music is a little removed from Heavy Metal, this straight forward hard rocking unit played a huge role in the development of the classic Heavy Metal sound. In Rolling Stone Magazine Andy Powell and Ted Turner were voted into the Top 20 Most Influential Guitarists Of All Time. Their fans already knew this.

The most important influences on Modern Heavy Metal are Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Motörhead. Black Sabbath were the architects who developed the the main frame of the genre, Ian Gillan of Deep Purple says that before Black Sabbath musicians thought being heavy was just playing louder. Judas Priest gave the genre it's uniform and identity, putting the official unwritten rule book together. Motörhead brought the 2 worlds of Punk Rock and Heavy Metal together. I was introduced to Motörhead by the same Punk Rocker in high school who introduced me to Black Flag. Punks and Metal Heads were both at Motörhead show. The bands mix of Punk & Metal was a huge influence on the development of Thrash Metal. No Motörhead, no Metallica, Anthrax or Slayer.

Correction Of The Police Rock Goes To College Date

Have to thank Speedy from So Many Roads To Ease My Soul for bringing to my attention that the date on the Police Rock Goes To College boot was wrong. I went with the date given by the original uploader of the DVD which was April 6, 1979. According to The Police Wiki they played The Paradise Theater in Boston Massachusetts that day. The correct date for the show is given as February 21, 1979. So update your file set, I have already uploaded a corrected file and corrected the information on the post as well. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

The broadcast had a few rough spots that I have tried to even out. At the beginning of the show the audio was a little muffled and muddy but evens out befor e the end of the first song. Raising the volume just resulted in a loud muddy noise so I left it alone.

This is Neil Young & Crazy Horse's first gig together in 4 years. The band had no rehearsals prior to the string of shows at Warners Theater and were functioning with a "new" member in Nils Lofgren, who played with the band briefly in 1971 and 1973. The show was streamed over Neil Youngs website.

The Traditional Heavy Metal sound of Scorpions was a welcome counter punch to the Hair/Glam Metal bands that were flooding the airwaves in the 1980's Heavy Metal take over. The Scorpions were long term pros in the genre by time the 1980's Heavy Metal surge having recorded their debut album in 1972. When bands like Poison were all over the radio and Metallica and the rest of the pioneers of the day were shunned bands like Scorpions, Judas Priest, Accept & Tesla offered up True Metal in between the Posers.

This tour came after a 6 year hiatus for The Moody Blues. After the success of the Seventh Sojourn LP and tour The Moody Blues went on a long hiatus so that the members could release some solo material and spend time with their families. During the interviews of this recording the band actually admits that they just couldn't stand one another any more. After 6 years they decided to get back together and see if the magic was still there. Thankfully it was and the band wrote and recorded the Octave LP and the fans were more than pleased. We lost Ray Thomas January 4, 2018 at the age of 76, no cause of death has been released.

Newcastle England's Venom crawled out of the underground during the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Formed to be the most extreme band that they could be, Cronos, Mantas, & Abaddon took the Satanic Metal banner and waved it high. Productions values were purposely low fi and speed was the motto. The band was a huge influence on the young underground metal scene. Venom is credited for giving the Black Metal genre it's name which was the name of their second LP. This recording comes fro the American Seven Dates Of Hell Tour for the Possessed LP. After this tour Mantas would leave the band and would be replaced by the twin guitar line-up of Mike "Mykus" Hickey and James Clare. The Calm Before The Storm LP was released by that line-up. After Calm Before The Storm Venom disbanded, only to reform with Mantas, Abaddon, Tony "The Demolition Man" Dolan (ex Atomcraft) on bass and vocals and second guitarist Al Barnes. More line up changes followed as well as a classic line-up reunion, until Venom settled on Cronos, Stuart "La Rage" Dixon on guitars, and Danny "Dante" Needham on drums. We also have a band called Venom Inc. that is comprised of Mantas, Abaddon, & Demolition Man touring as well

Hardcore Punk played a major role in the development of Modern Heavy Metal. The members of early Thrash Metal bands such as Metallica, Slayer, Voivod, & Anthrax  were influenced by the Hardcore Punk Scene in many ways. The Do It Yourself Ethic was one, these bands didn't wait around to get a record deal they released their music by themselves. They also took influence from the subject matter as well. Gone was the party all night and fuck all day lyrics as well as the break up songs. These new bands raged against the system, parents, poverty, war, politics, death, and nuclear annihilation. Then came the speed, faster and heavier was the way after hearing such songs as "Dog Bite" by The Dead Kennedys where they stop the take and start over because it was too slow..

Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf etc, were very instrumental in the genesis of Hard Rock & Heavy Metal. The Blues is the foundation for Rock & Roll and all it's children. If you want a little proof just listen to any Hard Rock group from the 1970's, Free, Bad Company, Led Zeppelin, Mountain, The Jeff Beck Group, Humble Pie, and more played a Heavy Blues/ Hard Rock that morphed into the Traditional Heavy Metal of bands like Thin Lizzy and UFO.

With a very quick search, I couldn't find any info on B.B. King's piano player Kato, if any one could elaborate a little please leave the info in the comments section.

17 nonconsecutive weeks at the #1 spot of The Billboard Hot 200, that's what Quiet Riot's Metal Health did for The Police's Synchronicity. The Police had toppled Michael Jackson's Thriller & Quiet Riot ended that reign. The time at the top was short as Lionel Richie's Can't Slow Down would end it a week later. Quiet Riot was the first Heavy Metal band to have a #1 album and a Top 5 Hit in the same week when "Cum On Feel the Noize" spent 2 weeks on The Billboard Hot 100 at #5. This set is from Quiet Riot's tour for Condition Critical the follow up to Metal Health and the beginning of the decline for the band as it failed to measure up to Metal Health's success. Further releases also failed to hit the sales of Metal Health and the band broke up . They reunited in the 1990's and are active now even though Kevin DeBrow died from a cocaine overdose November of 2007.

Flotsam & Jetsam formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1981. The band gained a following and soon drew the attention of Metal Blade Records owner Brian Slagel who signed them to a recording contract. The band appeared on Metal Massacre VII and released their debut album Doomsday For The Deceiver on Metal Blade Records. The band toured and was gaining momentum when the death of Cliff Burton put the brakes on. Jason Newsted auditioned for and won the open bass spot in Metallica. The band quickly found a fill in and continued on. This gig is actually historic for the reason that after Flotsam & Jetsam's set was over Metallica took the stage for their first gig with Jason Newsted on bass.

I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to even out some volume issues and re-edit a couple track marks. No EQ, or nooise reduction was used. The waves were encoded to MP3 320kbps due to the DVD having lossy audio.

The thing I find most interesting from this recording is the element that the Chicago Horn Section adds to the REO Speedwagon songs performed during the encore when all members of both groups are on stage.
