So I had planned on posting this a little while ago but with all the crap I went through with Blogger over Filefactory it wasn't posted. This is a very nice recording from Frank Zappa's 1976 Tour. The cool thing for me is that Frank has Grand Funk Railroad drummer Donny Brewer play drums on "Dinah Moe Humm".

Frank Zappa produced Grand Funk Railroad's final studio album with original bassist Mel Schacher. The band had already broken up after the release of the album Born To Die. Grand Funk wanted Fank Zappa to produce the album but it didn't happen. When Frank Zappa admitted interest in producing an album by Grand Funk Railroad the band reunited just to record with Frank!! The resulting Good Singin' Good Playin' actually had Frank Zappa playing lead guitar on the instrumental track "Out To Get You". This was the last Grand Funk recording at their own studio "The Swamp" in Fenton Michigan. The swamp is still in operation. My band Psychosis were lucky enough to have recorded our debut album there. When I told my guitar player that Frank Zappa had recorded in the very studio we stood in it seemed to put that little more to his playing we would get from him live, Frank being one of his biggest influences.

More Grand Funk Railroad, this one is the very well known ABC In Concert recording from 1972. I love this period of Grand Funk. It was in the 1970's (at least 1976 or later) that I 1st saw Grand Funk. Growing up in Detroit and waist deep in the Detroit music scene it was inevitable that I would grow up a Grand Funk freak, or hate them because you heard them on the radio a lot. There were only 2 artists played more on Detroit Rock Radio, Bob Seger and Ted Nugent. The Big 3 Of Detroit Rock's radio rotation was only eclipsed by the many Motown Greats! (too many to mention). But only one Detroit Rock & Roll band can claim that they opened for Led Zeppelin in Detroit, and Zeppelin's show had to be stopped due to the Detroit fans wanting there home boys back on stage. They kept chanting there name!. That band was Grand Funk Railroad (this comes from a Led Zeppelin documentary I watched on Tubi). Same thing happened when Zeppelin played the Boston Tea Party with Vanilla Fudge. The audience wouldn't stop the chants of Bring On The Fudge. (that comes from the book Hammer Of The Gods)

This record was never supposed to see the light of day. It's not included in the official Grand Funk Railroad canon. Mark Farner & Don Brewer recorded these demos in 1968 before actually forming Grand Funk Railroad. Lucky Eleven, the label they were on as members of Terry Knight & The Pack, released the album with out Mark & Don's permission. That being said, if you love Grand Funk like I do (which is a freakin' lot!), you really need this for your collection. Only one song was written by Mark but "We "Gotta Have Love", is a good song that shows the great writing to come. The only thing missing from this being a Grand Funk album is Mel Schacher's "bong shattering bass" (a paraphrase of Homer Simpson) Note the zip file is dated 1974 but the album was recorded in 1968 which is the date on the folder..so it doesn't confuse anyone (yes I was posting and smoking again)

For this weeks History Of Hard Rock And Metal we have Michigan's Grand Funk Railroad. Grand Funk Railroad were a big influence on a lot of Hard Rock/Traditional Metal bands. At one point in their career, Grand Funk outsold Led Zeppelin in America in records and concerts. One concert in particular lives on in Michigan Rock And Roll History. Grand Funk was the opening act for Led Zeppelin at Detroit's Michigan Palace (now a parking lot). After Led Zeppelin took the stage, the loyal Detroit Grand Funksters booed, demanding Grand Funk come back for more. The crowd was so rowdy and demanding Led Zeppelin left the stage, the concert halted. It actually happened, I have witnessed Detroit fans run off some of the sturdiest of bands. When Ozzy Osbourne first played Detroit after leaving Sabbath it was at The Masonic Temple Theater with Motörhead and Detroit's own R.U.R opening the show. The Detroit Ozzy fans booed so hard Hometown boys R.U.R didn't finish their first song. Motörhead took the stage with Lemmy saying "We Are Motörhead, We are the best band in the world and we are finishing our set!" The Detroit audience said "Challenge accepted, hold my beer" as they pelted Motörhead with everything they were holding, including their beer. I personally got into a fist fight with a guy that hit me as he attempted to pelt Lemmy with a handful of change. Motörhead left the stage in the middle of their 3rd song. Ozzy came out and threw raw meat at the audience, people just rolled on the floor in it. Detroit!?

For our first Independence Day offering we have The American Band Grand Funk Railroad. This recording comes from the 1980's reunion. For this reunion original bassist Mel Schacher decided to opt out due to his developing a fear of flying. Dennis Bellinger was recruited to take his place. This line-up recorded 2 albums, Grand Funk Lives and What Funk? The song "Queen Bee" from Grand Funk Lives was also included on the soundtrack to the animated movie Heavy Metal.

This is a fantastic show from some of Detroit Music scene royalty. 98.7 WLLZ-FM gathered together a line-up of 1960's & 70's greats backed by a band of 1980's biggest in the scene. This concert was for a great cause, raising funds for Detroit's Viet Nam Veterans. So this is an early tribute to our veterans (The USA holiday honoring out veterans, Veteran's Day is in 4 days). This is also another in a series of posts I have been making in tribute to Michigan Music. I was actually at this show with some of my friends screaming my self horse when Rob Tyner came out to rip through 3 MC5 classics. I was then knocked to the floor to see 2 members of the legendary Frost walk onto the stage. I mean Scott Morgan of The Rationals opened the show and it just didn't stop! I am so glad I obtained a copy of this recording and I highly recommend it to everyone!
