Another old show with a 1990s remaster from King Biscuit Flower Hour. The show was longer when it first aired back in 1983, but King Biscuit had trimmed it's shows down to one CD by this time. If you have this show on your drive in other forms this may be a sonic upgrade for you. I like it but it's missing the one thing that makes a great REO Speedwagon show...."Golden Country" the best song they ever wrote in my opinion, and the heaviest, it should be a Heavy Metal song, it's close enough in it's own on R.E.O./T.W.O. Anyway here's REO Speedwagon!!!

I remember the first time I heard R.E.O Speedwagon. I turned on my radio just as the DJ was saying here's "R.E.O. Speedwagon..." and "Golden Country" came on. Man that organ and the guitar riff just got me. I've always wanted to do a Heavier version of it. It really could be a Heavy Metal song. I actually made myself a compilation called Songs That Should Be Metal Songs "Golden Country's" on it. So are Bruce Springsteen's "Adam Raised A Cain", Queen's "Shear Heart Attack", and "Tenament Funster", The Eagles "Victim Of Love" among others.

Back to R.E.O. Speedwagon. I went out and bought the album and I still have it in rotation on my turntable. R.E.O. in the 1970s had a Spinal Tap kind of saga in the lead vocal position. Cronin's in Cronin's out, Mike Murphy's in Mike Murphy's out, Kevin Cronin's in, it made for what some call a spotty musical history. The change in vocalist always has a effect on the sound of any band. I am in no way saying that the Mike Murphy albums are bad albums. There are songs on those records that the Kevin Cronin R.E.O. continued to play live. They can not leave a stage without playing "Riding The Storm Out". This FM capture is a little thin on bass but is a great performance and a nice listen!

justdave's notes:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to even out some volume issues and re-edit a couple track marks. No EQ, or nooise reduction was used. The waves were encoded to MP3 320kbps due to the DVD having lossy audio.

The thing I find most interesting from this recording is the element that the Chicago Horn Section adds to the REO Speedwagon songs performed during the encore when all members of both groups are on stage.

Our first post from REO Speedwagon post at The New JDP comes from their 1977 appearance on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. The band was promoting the release of their first live album Live: You Get What You Play For. REO's star was on the rise, the next 6 albums would keep REO on the charts well into the 1980's. Their biggest success will come in 1980 with Hi Infidelity. That album would reach #1 on The Billboard Hot 200 and stay there for 15 weeks. 6 singles would be released and all 6 charted. I downloaded this from the old Hear Rock City blog so thanks go out to them!
