A fine set of performances from Rare Earth. This is after lead vocalist, drummer Peter Rivera had left the group. Rare Earth brought in Jerry La Croix formerly of Edgar Winter's White Trash, and Blood Sweat & Tears to sing. "Frosty" Eugene Smith-Frost replaced Rivera on drums in 1974. Chet McCracken replaced Frosty in 1975, but would leave by 1976 to join The Doobie Brothers.
Rare Earth was the first act signed to Motown's rock label, although not the first white act signed to Motown, that honor goes to The Rustix. They were however the first all white Motown act to have hits. Motown named their rock imprint Rare Earth Records. This surprised the band since they had only suggested it as a joke. Rare Earth was the opening act for the first California Jam. Rare Earth's cover of The Temptations "Get Ready" was their biggest hit landing at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, The Temptations version only hit No. 29. Their cover of "(I Know) I'm Losing You" landed at No. 7, The Temps version hit No. 8.

No clue why I didn't see this until today. I've been visiting your site for at least 8 months. Rare Earth is the shit. I met Peter Rivera in Elk Grove Village in 2014. He signed a few things for me, his book, his CD and a CD by the Classic Rock All-Stars and took pics with my daughter.
ReplyDeleteI am in search of their "Tight And Hot" album, only released in Canada. It's like looking for El Dorado, or Atlantis.
Never met any of the guys in Rare Earth. When my band Psychosis recorded our first set of demos it was in this little studio over a instrument store. Rare Earth was recording there too, we had to work around their drum set the first day. We were working at night they had the days. They were starting to work on the album that would become Different World. This was in like 1989 or so. The engineer played us some of the demos Rare Earth had recorded as examples of his work. He told us he never had worked on a Metal album before but was real eager to. He gave us a good deal too, thankfully. It didn't turn out very good, kind of muddy. We remixed it twice before starting re-recording it at Grand Funk's Swamp Studios. Much better, haven't heard Different World. I do have Tight And Hot in MP3 format, if you'd like it I'll zip it and send it to you...
DeleteLet Me Know.
