CD4 Track 10 John Sinclair Benefit Concert December 10, 1971

JustDave's Notes:

- Portland Expo Building Portland, Oregon, USA September 30, 1970 is the oldest known recording of Bob Seger with The Bob Seger System. Recorded by Joey Maloney on a mono reel to reel recorder.
- Cleveland, Ohio March 1973 is a live recording of Bob Seger & The Borneo Band sometimes called My Band. This band, after being fired by Bob Seger for unreliability, would go on to back Eric Clapton on his infamous 1974 tour where the band and Eric Clapton were all too drunk, rugged or both for the shows.
- Aragon Ballroom, Dallas, Texas, March 1974 is a recording of the early Silver Bullet Band. At this time Alto Reed was not a member of The Silver Bullet Band
- Oh Carol/God Love And Rock & Roll was performed at The Benefit Concert given in Ann Arbor Michigan for John Sinclair manager of The MC5 who was jailed for 2 marijauna joints and faced 10 years to life in prison. John Sinclair was a huge figure in the 1960s counter culture and leader of The White Panther Party that the establishment wanted silenced.

JustDave's Notes:
- The artwork says these are FM broadcast ecordings except for CD Four which is said to be a soundboard. The shows are all audience recordings.
- The Boston show is of note due to it having a live version of "Sunburst" a song that was rarely performed live.
- Added fade in/fade out to beginning and end of CD2 and CD3 as they both started abruptly.
- Fixed a bad edit at the end of CD3 Track 02 "Mary Lou".
- Deleted a repeated musical phrase at the beginning of CD4 track 01 "Feel Like A Number" where the line "Dear sir letters keep coming in the mail repeated.
- Added fade in/fade out to beginning and end of CD4.

JustDave's Notes:
- Since the cover calls the box set Playin' Star Again Volume 5 I tagged the files with that title. The CDs however have the title Never Gonna Slow Down Volume 5 which is why it is also named in the above information.
- All sources for this box set are audience recordings of very good quality. Of course this is always subject to the listener's opinion.
- All files tested lossy.
- All tracks had silence at the beginning and end which had to be removed.
- With the tracks testing lossy and having silence that needed to be removed from beginning and end these 4 CDs have to be (badly) sourced from MP3s.
- The artwork has quite a few mistakes in track titles: Disc Two track 01 is identified as "Like A Rock", the song is actually "Boomtown Blues": Disc Two track 02 is identified as "It's A Mystery" but is actually "Even Now": Disc Two track 07 is identified as "Katmandu" but is actually "Sometimes": Disc Two track 08 is identified as "Waiting For The Encore" but is actually "Night Moves": Disc Two track 09 is identified as "Night Moves" but is actually "Hollywood Nights": Disc Two track 10 is identified as "Hollywood Nights" but is actually "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight": On Disc Two there was no tracks 11, 12, or 13 but they were marked on the cover art.

JustDave's notes:
Great stuff! Bob Seger & Jason Aldean dueting on 8 tracks and chatting in between. This thing is worth the down load just for the guys duet on "Turn The Page"! I can't be more happy about the way the audio turned out here. CMT edited in clips of future songs right before interviews and some songs as well. These were distracting to the listening experience so I edited these out to make things flow better. Don't miss this one Bob Seger fans I think this might be the first broadcast or soundboard source to surface from Bob Seger's latest comeback. I'm not sure though.

I downloaded this one from BigO a while back. The BigO notes are below:

Thanks to jswetch for sharing the Shark tracks at Dime.

jswetch noted:

This short Sharks set is being seeded now in tribute to Andy Fraser, who passed away… and, by request. Thanks to the original taper (from long ago) and seeder (from a few years back). This was Andy’s post-Free project that he only stayed with for one album, First Water. That is available now on CD, much more reasonably than it was a few years ago when this was first seeded. I actually saw Sharks opening for Gentle Giant in NYC, but it was the Busta Cherry on bass version, and not the incarnation with Andy.

Thanks to Jeff James; bpthree; and the person who shared the Free in Sweden tracks at Dime.

Uploader’s notes:

This great sounding radio show comes from a well packaged boot entitled “Radio Free”. It also contained four BBC tracks as outtakes, but I have chosen not to include them, as at least one is officially released, and the other three may be studio outtakes instead of BBC stuff. You obviously can’t trust anything you read on a boot as gospel. These guys even went to the extent of having the disc look like the pink Island label, with the customary bootleg “Not for sale - radio broadcast only” on the disc.

ANDY FRASER R.I.P. 1952-2015

Free bassist Andy Fraser, the writer of All Right Now - who had previously fought both AIDS and cancer - has died at his home on March 16, 2015 in California. He was 62. The cause of death has not been confirmed, but he’d been dealing with AIDS and cancer in recent years. In the 1980s he was diagnosed with HIV and a form of cancer called Kaposi’s Sarcoma and he battled with suicidal thoughts which, he wrote on his website, were only alleviated when he came out as gay. Fraser had recently been a leading light in the Rock Against Trafficking charity.

Was (Not Was) are another of my favorite groups. Formed by some musicians from the Punk Rock and Garage Rock eras of Detroit Music. They make great music with tongues firmly planted in cheek. You wouldn't place them in an R & B/Funk band from their history but man they are great at what they do.

They run a great studio in Detroit that I was lucky enough to mix the debut album from my band Psychosis at. It had an automated board which at the time was a little rare and expensive. We recorded the thing at Grand Funk Railroad's old studio The Swamp. The mixing board was manual so we opted to go elsewhere to mix. Originally we went to a different studio to mix (which still receives no credit from us!). The engineer was great but his boss bounced us after we were there 3 days. We took him with us. We had to move so Ted Nugent could mix "Fred Bear".

So we end up at Was (Not Was)'s studio. When we had worked there a day our engineer said that Ted wanted to move to where we were again. The studio had all it's rooms booked including Bob Seger working on some demos. Our engineer says studio management told Ted they were fully booked. We know it wasn't because we were there and they liked us. They had some big names in the Michigan scene there...to bump us would not look good even though we were unkown, but hey it's a good story right?

Not sure but I most likely downloaded this from either Voodoo Wagon or Floppy Boot Stomp...both awesome sites you should visit.

Black Oak Arkansas Recorded: Reading Festival, Reading, England August 29, 1976
Thin Lizzy Recorded: Golders Green Hippodrome, London, England November 27, 1974

Black Oak Arkansas:
Jim "Dandy" Mangrum  lead vocals, washboard
Ruby Starr (R.I.P.) – duet vocals, backing vocals
Rickie Lee "Risky"/"Ricochet" Reynolds (R.I.P.) – rhythm guitar, 12-string guitar, vocals
Pat "Dirty" Daugherty – bass guitar, vocals
Jimmy "Soybean" Henderson (R.I.P.) – guitar
Stanley "Goober Grin" Knight (R.I.P.) – lead guitar, steel guitar, organ, vocals
Tommy Aldridge – drums

Thin Lizzy:
Phil Lynott (R.I.P.) bass, lead vocals
Brian Robertson guitar, backing vocals
Scott Gorham guitar, vocals
Brian Downey drums

When this popped up at The Trader's Den about a week or so ago someone commented "Sunken treasure has just been found after all these years" and called it "A must have for any Black Oak Arkansas fan!" I happen to agree! Actually even the most casual of Black Oak Arkansas listener should add this to their collection. This is a top notch recording of Black Oak Arkansas showing the Reading Festival attendees exactly what the noise in The States is all about. Black Oak roll out all their tricks from Dandy's washboard bashing, microphone stand crotch walking, and Ruby Starr belting out the backing vocals all the time looking so damn fine! Oh yeah there is also 3 Thin Lizzy songs LOL The recording is really fine, excellent even.

The Motor City's Mitch Ryder came out of the streets of Hamtramck, Michigan where he sang backup for a local group called The Peps. He left the group due to racial tensions and started fronting his own group. In the early 1960's  he was fronting Billy Lee & The Rivieras when he attracted the attention of record producer Bob Crewe. Bob renamed the band Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels and started releasing the bands records. The band had a string of Top Ten hits including "Jenny Take a Ride", "Little Latin Lupe Lu", "Devil with a Blue Dress On", and "Sock It To Me-Baby". Mitch went solo in the mid 1960's but never really matched the commercial success of the Detroit Wheels era. He remained on independent labels during the late 1970's early 1980's until John Cougar Mellencamp produced the Never Kick A Sleeping Dog album for Mitch's major label return. This show comes from the tour to promote that album. So download this one to here Mitch rip through a set of his 60's & 70's classics along with new tracks, of note is the performance of "Bow Wow Wow" a song he had recorded with Detroit band Was(Not Was).

JustDave's Notes:
- I have to say thank you to Sam Elliot's Mustache because this comes to us from his ever growing collection of Pre-FM recordings.

Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove "Ovu" Test Tone at the beginning of Side A for DJs to set levels before broadcasting of program. It has been encoded and moved to it's own folder so as not to be accidentily played.
- There are 2 locked groove Music Promo Beds at the end of Side B, they have been encoded and moved to the end of the program.

Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LPs prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the records prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System using distilled water prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable & tone arm balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth set: Needle Pressure & Antiskid digitally set:
- Computer Soundcard stereo field maximized.
- Goldwave set to record while filtering any DC Offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served the situation.
- Raised the volume of the commercials to match that of the music and voice overs.
- A rumble filter with an initial cut off of 50khz and a static steepness of 2 was used to lessen the needle noise on the commercials due to having to raise the volume to match that of the music and voice overs.

Other Notes:
- I always wondered what happened to Robyn Robins after he left The Silver Bullet Band. He spent 1982 through 1983 playing keyboards for the Henry Small led PRiSM during their tour to promote the album Small Change.
- I found a date April 25, 1982 for the show from the Kalamazoo Public Library website at https://www.kpl.gov/local-history/kalamazoo-history/arts-entertainment/loverboy-at-wings-stadium-4-25-1982/ which says both Loverboy and PRiSM were recorded for King Bicuit Flower Hour, tickets were $10.00 US and it was a sellout at 7200 persons in attendance. PRiSM was the opening act for Loverboy. It gives an initial date of May 23, 1982 airing for PRiSM on King Biscuit and a full setlist of Young and Restless, Heart and Soul, He’s In The Jailhouse Now, Rain, When Will I See You Again, Hole In Paradise, Don’t Let Him Know, Encore: Long Tall Sally. There is also a page just for dates of concerts at Wings Stadium https://www.kpl.gov/local-history/kalamazoo-history/arts-entertainment/wings-stadium/
- Looking through the Ian Hunter Track finder at https://www.hunter-mott.com/discography/index_tracks_ih.html this recording could be from Dr. Pepper Music Festival, Pier 84, New York NY September 11, 1981 or The Rick Derringer Benefit The Palladium, New York NY September 13, 1981 both shows were licensed by King Biscuit Flower Hour for broadcast.
- Bill Minkin only says Ian Hunter was recorded in New York City. I do believe it's from the Dr. Pepper Fest but I am not certain so just the year 1981 was used to date it.

JustDave's Notes:
- Once again we are in debt to Sam Elliot's Mustache for loning his vinyl for encoding.

Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove "Ovu" Test Tone at the beginning of Side A for DJs to set levels before airing the program. It has been encoded and place in it's own folder so as not to be played accidently.
- There are 2 locked groove music promo beds at the end of Side C, one with a Bill Minkin voiceover one without. They have been encoded as well.

- Turntable & tone arm balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth set: Needle Pressure & Antiskid digitaly set:

- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served the situation.

- A rumble filter with an initial cut off of 50khz and a static steepness of 2 was used to lessen the needle noise on the commercials due to having to raise the volume to match that of the music and voice overs.

Other Notes:
- I've liked Saga every since I saw my first video of them on MTV. Michael Sadler standing at the mic with his big mustache singing. I forget the song now, too bad because it was a start. I've collected a few shows by Saga off the internet but the more shows I of theirs I edit for Sam Elliot's Mustache the more I think Saga was a great live band! They play very well live and deliver a visual show to boot (literally I guess).
