This great show from a really awesome band is for our longtime friend shmoopatties. He recently asked me if I had heard of them and I hadn't. He asked if I could use my snooping out powers to try and find a couple gigs that he knew about. This was one of them, I found it on the Traders Den torrent tracker posted by Innerear. There is a remastered version floating around the internet which I do not have a copy of yet, but I will.
You may not know the band leader Stomu Yamashta but you may know his drummer Michael Shrieve of Santana fame. The band was founded by Stomu Yamashta along with, Al DiMeola, Steve Winwood, and Michael Shrieve when each of the musicians were in between musical projects. They released a studio album and played some gigs, I'm not sure if Al DiMeola or Steve Winwood ever appeared on stage with the band or not but Michael Shrieve was there all the way.
Fans of such Progressive bands like National Health, or Jazz Fusion bands would most likely become fans of Stomu Yamashta's Go. The rich soulful vocals and fantastic instrumentation made an instant fan of this old Headbanger!

Thanks so much JD, this'll be very interesting to check out!
ReplyDeleteMan I loved it the first time I heard it. Great musicianship, soulful vocals and composition skills that are very honed!

Well, how about that! Thanks a million, Dave! I really dig this band. The 'Live From Paris' LP was my white whale for several years, in the pre-internet days of physical crate digging...got a couple copies, now. It's killer, although, they sequenced the sides incorrectly, oddly enough.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I was able to bring this one to you. I'm also so glad I was able to hear it, WOW! I am awaiting a delivery to come in and I'll have that first album. I can't wait!

This is an amazing find JDP! I have only seen a bootleg from 1976 and it has Winwood singing on it and may have Al DiMeola. Klaus Schulze is on it. I wish I still had it. It looks like the core band went back to their projects for the 1977 leg of the tour.
ReplyDeleteI'm still looking for copies of a couple boots including the 1976 gig with Winwood and Di Meola. When I get them I will post them here.

There were actually three albums released; Go, Go Live From Paris and Go Too. Prior to this Stomu released some other progressive music, either under his name or as Stomu Yamashta's East Wind. Following this, his realeases tended to be more atmospheric synthesizer music. Unfortunately, most of his catalog has been generally out of print other than the Go albums. It looks like there are three shows that have circulated by this group as well as one for East Wind. BTW, should you track down the first GO album, you should be aware that the intended listening order is actually side two followed by side one.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, I forgot about Go Too and Live From Paris, thanks for reminding me. I did track down a vinyl copy of the first album. It's being shipped and should be here at it's new home soon!

Go Live from Paris 1976 is a live album that includes Winwood and Di Meola as well as Klaus Schulze. Thanks for this post!
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome Rob! I hope you enjoy it!

Thank you! I purchased this on vinyl in 1976 - https://www.discogs.com/release/1540072-Stomu-Yamashta-Steve-Winwood-Michael-Shrieve-Go. I was obsessed with this! Excited to hear this performed live!
ReplyDeleteHow is it that I missed this band? I am coming so late to this party that the musicians have left the stage so to speak. Such awesome music, I'm glad I was asked to find some shows by this band. If not I would not know...wow!

I admit to being overwhelmed. Someone points out a band I missed, and there's this small part of me that goes "argh...now I'm going to spend a few weeks listening to a new band that I'm totally obsessed with." On the other hand, that's not really a problem. :)
DeleteI know what you mean. I'm the same way, I have to find their releases and bootlegs and sit and listen almost to the point of a scientific study.

Hey, Dave! I just sent you some newspaper clippings about this show that you may find of interest. Also, check this out: https://voodoowagon.blogspot.com/2023/12/joe-cocker-go-king-biscuit-flower-hour.html
ReplyDeleteYamashta did some of the music for Man Who Fell To Earth - Bowie vehicle. This got me started when I was gifted the original Go album for a long distant birthday. Great stuff. Thanks
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome! I am just now starting to discover Stomu Yamashta's music and with every piece I hear I am becoming a big fan.
