Judas Priest fans will love this show! Rob Halford is in fine voice and there are songs in the set that will be dropped in later years. The almost 11 minute "Genocide" is worth the download time alone. This tour was the beginning of Judas Priest aiming for a more radio friendly style hoping to really break in the United States yet keeping the core "sound" they had developed over the previous years. At this point in time Judas Priest had yet to headline most US cities it played. The ones they did were in smaller theaters than the arenas they served as opening act in. They had not even played Detroit and wouldn't until headlining their Screaming For Vengeance Tour. Their headlining gig at Cobo Hall Arena even including Iron Maiden as opening act, on tour for Number Of The Beast. It was mind blowing!!

Wow! I'm looking forward to listen to this! In my opinion, the period before this 'radio friendly' turn was the best, especially on Sad Wings of Destiny. KK was really grinding it on guitar with his hard edged sound. I think Angel of Retribution somewhat returned to a similar approach.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree 100% with you. I will put forth this however...The commercial turn did put Judas Priest on the radio more. Which in turn helped to bring more Heavy Metal to the radio. Without knowing which albums really ignited that Metal radio take over. Quiet Riot Metal Health, Def Leppard Pyromania, etc. Which one not being made would send a butterfly effect rippling through time and Heavy Metal stays underground. Okay yes I have had a bit to smoke and that is a complete stoner thought.

I think that Bon Jovi played the main role with all those girls attending their concerts. Rainbow had their commercial success after Dio, but how many people can say their life was changed by those radio friendly albums compared to the previous ones?
ReplyDeleteSince you asked, there were people in the US who had not heard the records or seen Judas Priest in concert till Screaming For Vengeance was released. That was the first time Priest played Detroit with Iron Maiden in tow as opening act. So yes there were just as many people who's lives were changed by the commercial albums as well as the earlier heavier releases. And yes Bon Jovi did a huge lift bringing women into Heavy Metal but Priest's British Steel, Ozzy's first 2 albums and Quiet Riot's Mental Health were 3 albums that really helped get Metal on the radio. Quiet Riot's Mental Health was the 1st Heavy Metal album to hit Billboard's Number 1on the album charts. Let's not forget the heavy lift done by AC-DC's Highway to Hell either.
