Our 1st post from British Prog-Rockers Marillion is a fabulous Pre-FM Recording from the tour to promote their 2nd LP Fugazi. I learned about Marillion around 1984/85 through this kid Mike who my 1st wife had babysat in the past. He lived next door to wear she lived when her and I started dating. He had this great record collection, which was full of imports, minor label and local releases.
We discovered Raven, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, & Manowar together. Every weekend I would spend a few hours talking music with Mike. One day he pulls out a few new albums he had ordered which included an album from Manilla Road, Marillion and Onslaught (British Thrash!!). He played a little of all 3 before he had to leave. I borrowed the Onslaught album and taped it. At the time I wasn't into Prog-Rock. I didn't come back to Prog-Rock and Marillion till the 1990's when I saw the Yes Union Tour (Awesome!!).
This Pre-FM from the Tour for Fugazi takes me back to those days when al of us Hardcore Punk Rockers and Metal Heads got together to create a new Music. Prog-Rock had no part in the Thrash Metal Movement. Like Punk Rock we wanted our music without the over indulgence that Prog-Rock could get bogged down in. Thank The Gods Of Music For Bands Like Marillion who kept the flag of Prog-Rock going.
So download this Pre-FM show from Marillion when they were considered The Rising Stars Of Neo-Progressive Rock.

Back in the lowlands of Belgium, hard rocking bands such as Deep Purple, Rory Gallagher and Judas Priest were amongst those we could talk about and agree. And when Marillion's Misplaced Childhood arrived on the LP turntable, we could only agree that "yep, no discussion allowed, this is a masterpiece" and still is nowadays to my ears. Thanks for this great pre MC concert !
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Derek! Glad you're enjoying the Marillion. I another Pre-FM recording coming from them real soon too. My friends and I always agreed on Priest & Purple but I caught a lot of shit for Rory Gallagher and Frank Marino. They always shouted Clapton, Beck & Trower. There were endless drunken arguments about that(haha). But it was 1990 something and we were working on an album. I was listening to anything Non-Metal so as not to subconsciously rip off someone. So it was Joe Walsh, America, Toto, Foghat etc. A good friend of the band asks if I wanted to see the Yes Union show and explained the line up. I went and enjoyed the hell out of it. When we got back to the farm basement to unwind, I pulled out my copy of Script For A Jester's Tear (given to me by Mike years ago insisting I would love it). I put it on and became a fan. My guitar player loved it too. We would play some of their stuff before our gigs. It was funny to watch the looks on some of the faces in the crowd (Ha!). We were Speed/Thrash Metal some people were like..."Are we in the right hall Dude?" Talk to You later Derek!
