I didn't thin I would ever get a show in this weekend, Rosebud has been busy making her picks I think this weekend we may have hit a record count for her. One of the many things Rosebud and I share is a love for all things Black Sabbath. No one could convince me that any era of Black Sabbath sucked. You may not like the Tony Martin era or Glenn Hughes era but I love every album they ever produced. Music is subjective, we love what we love. Never let anyone tell you what to like.
This is a kick ass show from the Tony Martin era, a Pre-FM recording to boot. Tony Martin held the front man position when a lot of Ozzy & Sabbath fans were throwing rocks at Tony Iommi for not giving up the ghost. Even Geezer Butler got into it by writing a song called "Give Up The Ghost" on his first solo album. The albums might not be Master Of Reality or Paranoid but they are great albums in their own right. I also think that the new mix of Forbidden sucks. I hate when a band changes the sound of a classic recording. Thank God the remaster of Born Again still has the same mix. The mix that influenced the Thrash Metal sound. The mix for Forbidden hits like a blunt hammer and influenced the Hardcore/Metalcore blunt force trauma production of today.

Dave, I'm with you. I love the tony Martin era of Sabbath. Remixed albums are a double-edged sword for me. I love remixes that really add something different from the original. I use the Trower "Bridge of Sighs" and Dio "Holy Diver" remixes as an example. They add extra parts that were recorded for the sessions, and extend fades out to their end. To me, they are almost listening companions to the original albums, rather than a replacement. Sadly, what Iommi did with the Forbidden remix is just change the sound, and not for the better. He completely ruined "Can't Get Close Enough to You" by removing the shifting reverb on Martin's voice in the original. -Bob
ReplyDeleteThank you Bob I agree "Can't Get Close Enough To You" is a great example of ruining an album in the remix. Another bad set of remixed remasters is the Megadeth remasters with Mustaine re-recording guitar parts as well I also agree with the Dio and Trower sets actually bringing out little things in the mix that you could only barely hear, great stuff.
