I have been looking for another Van Halen soundboard that dosen't sound like crap other than The US Festival boot. I mean just the David Lee Roth era not the Sammy Hagar era. Sammy's time in Van Halen is well documented with a few nice sounding boots as well as a live album. The David Lee Roth era is pretty undocumented in comparison. Almost every soundboard bootleg that I have come across to me sounded like crap. This is a soundboard I have been waiting to hear. I have actually heard some bad copies of this show so was surprised. It sounds pretty good, however this brings up a different discussion.
David Lee Roth has always been a sloppy live vocalist. I wouldn't put him in the category of say present day Vince Neil. Dave could enunciate the words that came out of his mouth, when remembered. Vince Neil has recently been fired by a once again re-united Motley Crue for his sloppy singing. Vince has always been a little sloppy but he's gotten bad. Check him out on Youtube some embarrassing stuff. David Lee Roth wasn't always too drunk to remember the words ala US Festival 1983. He danced around so much that he wasn't singing on cue or missing verses. Now I'm not saying that Sammy Hagar era Van Halen was better live than the Roth era. That's like comparing Syd Barrett Pink Floyd to Gilmour/Waters Pink Floyd live, two very separate beasts. Sammy and David are two very different performers. Now my 1st chance seeing Van Halen was opening for Black Sabbath on Ozzy's last tour with them in 1976. I don't remember Dave being sloppy that night but I do remember Black Sabbath sounded stale after Van Halen's set. The rest as they say is history...
The Flac file CDs have been uploaded separately. They will open separately as well

Hi Dave. It's bob. When was Vince Neil fired again? I hadn't heard that he was fired recently. He sang with them at the NBA draft show on April 28. His voice didn't sound that bad, but he only sang about every 15th word. dude needs to seriously work on restoring his breath support.
ReplyDeleteAs for Van Halen, there are about nine or ten great-sounding soundboards from their club days from 1974 to around 1977. These are great listens because you get to hear a young and hungry Van Halen putting their own spin on the popular songs of the day, as well as early versions of original tunes that would show up on albums for the next several years.
Interestingly enough, the next most prominent era for DLr-era VH soundboards is this 1979 "World Vacation" tour. I have five different shows from this tour -- all soundboards. I haven't downloaded your copy of the West Palm beach show because I already have it, but I suspect the new version of this show that you have now was remastered by a cat named ROCKNROLLCHUCK. He added a little reverb, and widened the stereo field to make it sound more like a live album. After his remastering, this show is now the best-sounding one from the tour, although the others aren't bad either.
There's a couple other DLR SBD shows from '79. Shit Fire Save Matches from San Diego and also a show from Tucson, both of which to my naked steaming ears sound decent enough. Not to mention the well-circulated Fresno show. As for forgetting the words at US....that was an act. If you check out other shows from that tour, he did the same schtick.
ReplyDeleteBack to early VH shows,...there's a series of shows called "Eddie Steady GO" which are excellent audience shows from England in 1978 which are attributed to one of the sound guys having placed a mic near the board. Most of those shows are awesome. Not SBD, but the raw energy is, like, what this hungry band was all about. And not coincidentally, they were either club shows on off nights, or shows where they were opening for the Sabs.
I have some of the early before being signed shows..The Golden West Ballroom for one which is a fair (CD1) to poor (CD2) recording and has a lot of covers. I like listening to CD1 every once and a while but it's not something I would have in heavy rotation. I'll check out some of the other shows you mentioned too see what I may find. It's also very possible I judge the sound quality of recordings a little differently than you or most so that could explain it.
