The concert actually was at Palisade Gardens, San Diego, California July 20, 1985. This info and a copy of the flyer came from a Gang Green fan website https://metallipromo.com/gang.html. Original upload said it was at Roller Rink, San Diego CA 07-20-1985. If the date is correct than this is at The Palisade Gardens.
I forgot about this one. Alcohol driven Hardcore/Crossover Punk. I used to play Gang Green a lot during my time in Psychosis due to the fact I didn't want other Thrash Metal bands to influence my writing. I listened to a lot of Joe Walsh, Joe Cocker, Devo, FEAR, Dead Kennedys, Misfits, Ian Gillan (solo) and Gang Green. I guess it did affect my writing since after I left they changed their name to Rusted Shut with the bass player taking over vocals and song writing. The new songs sounded like Black Sabbath with lyrics about his dog and room mate. I went on to play Death Metal for a while with Cranial Colonic (a much better name than Rusted Shut).

Wow...Palisade Gardens! Yes, rollerskating rink in the North Park community of SD. Local teen hangout/pickup joint back in the day...some great memories. Thanks for this show and the memory jog!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! In the Punk Rock era at first there wasn't too many clubs that would book them. I saw The Clash at a rollerskating rink in Detroit. I can't remember what other bands played there. The lesser known Punk acts played at the smaller bars Bookie's, Nunzio's, & Menjo's which were also all gay clubs. I was a happy person when more Punk oriented bars and clubs opened. Enjoy the Gang Green, they played Blondie's when they hit Detroit. Roosevelt the owner would book any band that could draw an audience and not completely destroy the bar. C.O.C., D.R.I, G.B.H. and Suicidal Tendencies all played there. I was a regular.

ReplyDeleteYou're welcome and thank you for the compliment. I have been collecting for quite some time. I have a lot of shows from many different bands and styles of music. I've seen a lot of sites come and go. The 1st thing I do is check the artist list. I usually go for the bands that I don't see a lot of and take them first, just in case the site dies. The thing is as diverse as the blog is I will not post a band I do not like nor will I post a show I wouldn't want to listen to again and again. Enjoy the Gang Green!

DeleteJD - San Diego's first legit punk rock venue was called The Skeleton Club. It existed for about 6 months in mid-late 1979. Unfortunately, it was located only a few blocks from SDPD headquarters (Market Street) and was low hanging fruit for the cops.
ReplyDeleteIn the Detroit scene if you didn't want to play the gay clubs as a Punk & Metal band your option was Blondie's. It of course was in a part of town where no one should go after dark. It was next door to a junk yard that often left junk cars in the parking lot. It would look busy as hell when you roll in to set up only to find it's all cars from the junk yard. Patrons would have to park in the street or the grass lot on the side of the bar. Then you get all the hookers hitting you up before you get inside. Wild times!
