For this segment of our Salute To Progressive Rock Bands we have a show from Canadian Rockers Saga. Saga comes from the same musical waters as Kansas, Electric Light Orchestra, Supertramp, Asia, Ambrosia, Styx, Journey before Steve Perry, Phil Collins era Genesis, Trevor Rabin era Yes and many others. A style of Progressive Rock disowned by Prog-Rock Purists and insultingly called Pomp-Rock or Pomp-Prog. Progressive Rock with a distinct lean towards radio airplay and hitting the charts. This was to be done without sacrificing musicianship. A fine line just ask Carl Palmer about Love Beach.
Saga scored a couple Top 20 Singles. "Wind Him Up" hit #7 in Germany, "On The Loose" hit #2 in USA, and "The Flyer" hit #19 in the USA. All 3 of those songs were in heavy rotation on early era MTV. A lot of bands profited from the fact that MTV didn't have a lot of videos to play . Meaning if you had a video it made it on the air. Those 3 videos from Saga made me seek out their albums, which I still listen to (the vinyl yes JD). This tape shows a little age, but is an enjoyable listen. I do have a couple more Saga show that I will be posting in the future.
