This Show Is For Our Friend Bud_e_luv_bomb For Putting Me On The Trail Of An Edge Of Thorns Era FM Broadcast From Detroit.

I introduced Rosebud to Savatage, I am a huge fan and yes I own every release on vinyl & CD. I have everything from The Avatar Demos to every Trans-Siberian Orchestra release. I have the original Combat label copies of Sirens and The Dungeons Are Calling. I had to "special order" them through Sam's Jams, a huge record store in Ferndale at Woodward & 9 Mile Road. The Mile Roads were named for how many miles they were from downtown Detroit. Like I said Sam's Jams was a huge record store. The original building is now converted to a strip mall with 15 smaller stores in it. If they didn't have it the world order it. They also would carry releases any and every local band that scraped enough money together to record. Damn I miss that place.

Anyway Rosebud fell in love with Savatage. She prefers the Zachary Stevens era to the early Power Metal of Jon Oliva. Edge Of Thorns was the first album without founding member Jon Oliva. Jon had left the band to focus on his band Doctor Butcher. Jon hand picked Zachary for his replacement. Jon also co-wrote every song on Edge Of Thorns. The music continued it's evolution to Progressive Metal. Zack's voice is deeper, more dramatic and soulful, fitting the dramatic music. So any Tribute To Rosebud's Favorite Singers needs to have Zachary Stevens represented.

Edge Of Thorns would be the final album with Chris Oliva on guitar. 2 months after this show Chris Oliva and his wife Dawn were hit head on by a drunk driver who crossed over the in their lane. Chris was killed instantly, he was 30. Dawn recovered from her injuries, but passed away in 2005. The band continued, the brother's had made a pact if one dies, the band carries on. The music changed, they still made great albums but Chris Oliva's guitar is missed. This fabulous show, though too short, is a perfect example of Savatage live. A must have!!!

  1. Totally enjoying the live Savatage you've been posting.
I too bought lots of records at Sam's Jams & Car City Records back in the late eighties / early nineties as well. Chris Oliva was such a ripper, & this band was on fire while he was around. Once again - thank you.
Would love to get listed in your blog list if i could - i have had you listed in mine, please check me out & consider adding me. I'd really appreciate it!

    1. You're welcome for the Savatage, Icky. Car City Records was another damn good place to get music. I picked up a lot of underground vinyl there as well. I'll add your blog to my site list, no problem. I just downloaded the Saviors discography, good band. I have one of there EPs on CD. Love Doom Metal of all varieties, hell I love all types of Metal. Anyway you're welcome for the live Savatage and I'll add your site to the list.

  2. My grandparents lived in Ferndale, not far from Sam's Jams. One day I asked (more like begged) my grandmother to take me there. I spent whatever money I had on Celtic Frost, Motorheard and Kreator cassettes.

    1. Man I used to practically live there. While married to my 1st wife, her sister lived right off of 9 Mile a few streets down from Sam's Jams she would visit her sister while I shopped at Sam's Jams. There was also a place on Woodward by like 15 Mile called Solo Records. Used to shop there a lot too.

  3. I'm not doubting the original poster, but my gut says this from a month before, August 7th. This isn't 75 minutes like I mentioned but as soon as I saw the set I knew this was that show. I used to listen to Z-Rock religiously at that time, I don't recall another broadcast. The Galactic Cowboys were the other band that day. Either way it's brilliant mini set. Thank you.

    1. I agree with you on that one Bud_e_luv_bomb. You never know with collecting bootlegs when it comes to date and location. Every site I found info said that the date was September 7. The location however wasn't like that. Some sites said State Fairgrounds Theater some say Harpo's. I'm betting on State Fairgrouds. I went with Harpo's on this post because of the original uploader's text. The sound doesn't quite match that of most Harpo's shows I have. They are a little thicker, more condensed sounding, it's the size of the room pa placement and the height of the stage vs the soundboard. My sound man hated Harpo's.
The short set list could be either the taper missed some of the broadcast or the tape may have degraded in spots. It also could have been a rebroadcast. Hey I was just happy to find it lol..I actually found it the maybe a day after we talked about it. That's why it's dedicated to you. I had no idea a broadcast from the Edge Of Thorns tour. We'll find the longer version.

      Enjoy my friend
