Keith Emerson died on March 10, 2016 from a single self inflicted gun shot to the head, he was 71.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer was the first Classic Rock concert that I took Rosebud to. We had attended many concerts while we dated, and after our marriage, but mostly Heavy Metal/Hard Rock concerts since it was a mutual love. When ELP reunited in the 1990's I saw it as an opportunity to introduce her to some classic Progressive Rock. I called her from work and told her that ELP would be at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Michigan and could she try to get us some tickets. When I arrived home she told me that we would be sitting on the main floor 6th row center stage. What a set of seats, our friends Gypsy Dan and Prof Paul joined us for one of the best concerts we have ever attended (that's saying a lot, I seen Stevie Ray Vaughan jamming with Joe Cocker!). Keith Emerson pulled out the old Hammond Organ during an extended "Rondo" and proceeded to play it, beat it , kick it, throw it around, and stab it with knives. Rosebud was blown away and a fan for life. We saw them a couple more times during the 1990's reunion period before the break up.

What a great concert story! I discovered ELP while in high school and loved Emerson's keyboard playing. A very sad end...thanks for sharing this show.
ReplyDeleteJD & Rosebud, thanks for the ELP. Did not know they had a KBFH show from '74. Love the warts and all of KBFH shows. Always hungry for more!
ReplyDeleteA sad day for Rock n Roll indeed....

Wow, another rock legend passes. Wonderful story about seeing ELP, Justdave. Great memory for you and Rosebud to share forever. I'm not a huge progressive rock fan, but I did see ELP in February 1978, right before they broke up. Emerson's playing was a true highlight og that show. May he Rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteBen a bad run of rock greats leaving the stage...
ReplyDeleteRosebud and I have decided to try and see every classic rock show that we can this summer, there are still many that she hasn't seen2 shows we are looking forward to are Peter Gabriel & Sting together as well as Steely Dan & Steve Winwood together, Rosebud has seen none of them.
Dave
Please accept my belated thanks for this. Since I sold my 3 LP set in the throes of the punk explosion, haven't heard this gig in something approximating forever.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!
