My first exposure to the music of Rory Gallagher came from a copy of Calling Card that my cousin had found outside in a mud puddle. It was an 8-track tape (yep I'm that old) , so to make it playable I had to un-spool the thing, dry it out then re-spool it. I finished that process and stuck it in the tape deck and was a fan of Rory ever since. So it is nice to have a broadcast recording from that era for my collection. It's a short on, less than an hour, but Rory and band are fired up and give a great performance. A reporter who was in the audience wasn't impressed at Rory's performance and wrote a rather unfavorable review which has been included so you can see read it yourself (it's actually only the first page of the article).

I have a ton of Rory boots, but unless my memory has gone to complete mush, I've never ever even seen this one. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Pop9 & SilentWay, I've seen it on one other site (where I downloaded it from), hope you enjoy it!

This is a performer that I've always been AWARE of but have no memory of actually hearing him. I saw him at Winterland in 1976 but during his set I fell down a flight of stairs and was having my chin sewed up by the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic. (Advice for the young 'uns: tequila and stairs don't mix). Made it back to my seat for Bob Seger and Blue Oyster Cult, though. That show was just two days after this one....
ReplyDeleteNever actually seen Rory myself, not sure why he played Detroit a few times but I missed him for some reason or other. Would like to have seen Rory Gallagher, Bob Seger and BOC together.

I also never saw Rory either. The recordings I've heard, live or studio, have been fantastic including this one. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're enjoying the Rory E Craig. That's the great thing about bootlegs .. you can check out groups you never saw live that may not be around anymore .. and you can check out an artist you heard about (or never heard about) and see if you want to spend your hard earned concert dollars on them or not.

By the way...there's a VERY AFFORDABLE "Original Album Series" Rory Gallagher set that you can find on Amazon for as low as about US $17.00 that has five albums. No liner notes but for that price, it's a great deal. I just picked it up and am checking Gallagher out...I probably should have bought some of his albums "back in the day!" I wish I could tell you how great Gallagher was that night but me falling down the stairs was because I was majorly impaired that night. I recall parking the car over on Geary Street and chugging Jose Cuervo Silver and then smoking something that was passed down the row on the hot airless mezzanine level..... : and the next thing I remember was waking up in the medical station while they put 11 stitches in my chin....
ReplyDeleteLooks like I'm going to have to ask for some Rory Gallagher for Father's Day this year .. thanks for the heads up on that collection I must have it. I've been a fan for a long time and have a lot of his music on vinyl. Calling Card is my favorite release of his (probably because it was the first I heard). I have a lot of Rory boots and will be posting much more from him in the future.

There are two varieties of those CDs: "Original Album Series" and "Original Album Classics" - I think that's something to do with domestic or import copies...but either way they're a great deal if you find 'em at the right price point. Some artists have two or three sets out so it's almost like buying a boxed set of their works.
ReplyDeleteI've seen one for Pantera and one for Alabama that were around Us $24. The Pantera one uses the original masters for the collection while the Alabama one uses the original masters for all but the Mountain Music CD which is a remastered version.
ReplyDeleteThe flac version of this album can't be opened. Peter. (Sydney).
ReplyDeleteOK Peter, give me about 24 hours and I should have it re-posted for you.
