Great performance from the masters of Hard Rock Power Pop Cheap Trick. Westwood One caught the band ripping up the stage at The Joint in Las Vegas. Not only do they play a set of fan favorites, they include a stunning tribute to John Lennon/The Beatles. The John Lennon track "Cold Turkey" is given the Cheap Trick treatment leading into "Heaven Tonight" which leads into The Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour". All of this in great pre-fm quality.

Thanks Dave! A great show from Rockford's best! Living in the Chicago area, I've seen these guys more times than I can count. I was originally turned onto the band by Robin's cousin, who I attended HS with!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Paul. It's always great to watch someone local that you know go all the way. I was lucky enough to have an Aunt who was really good friends with a lot of people in the Detroit Music scene in the 1970's. I grew up with members of the MC5 hanging out at my house and actually had Frigid Pink rehearse in my back yard for their first tour. Glad you're enjoying the Cheep Trick and thanks for sharing your memories.

:) The last time I saw Cheap Trick they were on a double bill with Peter Frampton in 2015, here in Vegas. They went on first and both acts were fantastic! I'd like to see CT again this year, but we'll see how $$ their tickets are. I did see, Frampton last year and he was still crazy good! I recorded that show (as with in 2015) but haven't mastered it quite yet. I have so many to master... Thanks again, G.
DeleteLast time I saw Cheap Trick was in the mid 1990s. Cheap Trick were great. Slash's Blues Ball, Johnny Lang and Monster Magnet were the other bands on the bill. Slash's Blues Ball sucked but the rest were great as well. But a bit of a weird bill.

Cheap Trick in Brussels Belgium, end of the seventies September 2, 1979, was my first BIG concert. I was there with friends waiting for the band to play the only song we knew at that time : I want you to want me.
ReplyDeleteThe guy next to me got a bit nervous, when will they play their hit song ???
You dummy I had to reply !!! This is not Cheap Trick yet, this is the first band to play, I heard they're called Molly Hatchet. I had never heard of this opening band before but was a big fan afterwards. Good old memories,
Greetings from Paris,
Now Molly Hatchet and Cheap Trick in 1979 together? That's a nice combination. Not sure when I first saw either of those bands but it was most likely around 1980.

I had to fight a little with Gemini but this is how it ends up on AI nowadays : The Brussels Connection
ReplyDeleteCheap Trick definitely played Forest National in Brussels on September 2, 1979. While many official archives list the headliner and sometimes omit the support, it makes perfect sense that Molly Hatchet was on that bill.
The two bands were essentially "touring partners" that entire summer. They had played together just the day before (September 1) at the massive Zeppelinfeld festival in Nuremberg, Germany. Since both bands were already in the region and moving toward the UK for further dates, Molly Hatchet likely stayed on as the support act for the Brussels show.
Would have loved seeing them together around that era. When I saw Molly Hatchet Meat Loaf was on the bill. It was in Toledo Ohio and it was a one day festival called Toledo Speedway Jam. They had a couple of them over the 1970s and early 1980s. Can't remember who else was there.
