Wadada Leo Smith's Great Lakes Suites project is kind of special for me having lived in Michigan all my life. Like almost anyone who grows up here The Great Lakes was where my family spent our summers vacations, camping, boating, fishing, and swimming. Wadada's compositions are both as deep and wide as the vast bodies of water that inspired them.

BigO had hosted this show in MP3 format. I have included the artwork that BigO had made for their version of this show....so thanks go out to them for the cover art.

I love hearing Jazz bands take on the songs of non-Jazz artists. Bob Dylan couldn't be farther removed from Jazz (in my humble opinion). Absolutely Sweet Marie was formed to examine the music of Bob Dylan through the eye of a Jazz Composer. For this show the band is promoting their 2nd CD Another Side Of Blonde On Blonde. I'm not a huge fan of Bob Dylan's work (please no hate comments). I own 1 Greatest Hits CD and a CD that was being given away for free when ladies bought lingerie at Victoria's Secret. I also have Bob Dylan & The Band's Before The Flood and Basement Tapes albums on vinyl. That being said I love this performance. If you love Bob Dylan you should download this one to check out the arrangements the songs are given. If you love Jazz this one's for you too!

I also have a great show by The Kieth Jarrett Trio performing the music of Bob Dylan available on the blog here if you are interested in hearing a Jazz Piano Trio's take on Dylan.

Bob Weir has joined "the band in the sky". Seems we are losing our Muiscal Heros left and right. I cried when Ozzy Osbourne passed. I know a lot of people cried when Bob Weir passed. I found solace in Ozzy's music. This is for all Rosebud and My Friends who are morning the passing of Bob Weir (like We did Ozzy) in the hopes it helps to give you solace (like Ozzy's music did Us). I think it's kind of fitting that Jerry Garcia couldn't sing and was hanging around in the background playing guitar driving the band while Bob Weir carries the flag for the day. Why? because I'm betting that is the way Deadheads saw it when they went to see Bob Weir with The Dead & Co. That Bob Weir was there carrying the flag for the day while Jerry Garcia was hanging somewhere in the background playing guitar driving the band. If you have never heard it you're going to love this performance. I mean a 23 minute Jam on the Motown track "Dancing In The Streets". Plus with Jerry Garcia not having to sing, he was free to really play some inspired stuff!! So this is Our Love to all Our Friends out there mourning Bob Wier. We hope it helps..........

That's right Rosebud isn't just a fan of the more commercial Heavy Metal. Oh No! she loves Morbid Angel. Morbid Angel was the first Death Metal band I introduced Rosebud to. They were also the first Death Metal band she ever saw in concert. I came home from work one day to find Rosebud had bought tickets to a show headlined by Motörhead with Morbid Angel as the opening act. She says "I got us tickets to see Morbid Angel!!" I looked at the tickets and said "You forgot to say Motörhead would be headlining." She says "We've seen Motörhead 3 times I bought the tickets because Morbid Angel will be there."

Sacred Reich had in the early days of The Metal Underground what I would kind of jokingly call a "hit single" with "Surf Nicaragua". I don't care who you met where they didn't always know about the same bands. In the long long ago before the internet your next door neighbor might not know about the same bands as you, and that as they say is not bulls**t. Metallica had not yet broken the Glass Ceiling of The Record Companies thinking TRUE METAL was not profitable. Hell American record companies didn't even want to sign Ozzy Osbourne to a solo deal (can you imagine being a AandR Manwho passed on Ozzy). No matter where you were or who you met, they all knew "Surf Nicaragua".

If you were a Metalhead in the days of the True Metal Underground, you can relive it with this boot. If you were too young or not even born then you can see what the "old guys at the shows" are running their mouths about. Granted this show was recorded in the 1990s but these guys were their back in the beginning when it was all new!

Ike & Tina rock the house in their typical high energy style. It's rather ironic that they chose to cover Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed", a song about spousal abuse, given the known history of the relationship. The raw emotion can be heard in Tina's voice when she cries .."Please don't make us bleed!"

The title of the CD is Europe 1993 but Black Sabbath didn't play a single show in 1993. Recorded in 1992, this boot wasn't released until 1993, hence the name and another example of bootleggers caring about the money not the music or the facts. Anyway, this is a very clean sounding soundboard. You can hear all the instruments clearly, however the bass is a little thin (IMHO). Black-Sabbath.com says this boot comes from the masters of the original TV broadcast tapes, I say if your a Sabbath fan and you don't have this..... You Should !!

I really enjoyed listening to this collection. It's a lot of  great music packed into one sweet little package. I keep coming back to the memory that the guy who turned me on to Tom Petty also turned me on to Devo, Black Flag and The Meatmen. Looking at it with an older mind it actually shouldn't really of surprised me actually. The Punk Rock movement was brought about by music fans that felt Rock music had gotten too bloated and self-indulgent. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers music was anything but bloated and self indulgent. The wrote great Rock songs with great stories in the lyrics. No tours with a 100 piece orchestra and Benmont Tench wasn't surrounded by 60 synthesizers. The same reason their music made some of their influences want to record and tour with them. Bob Dylan, George Harrison, to name a couple. Plain and simple Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were dA Damn Good Rock & Roll Band. Hope you enjoy this collection!!

Now if you have been visiting The New JDP for a while you may know that one of my favorite Jazz Musicians is Nils Petter Molvær. Nils is a pioneer in the genre called Future Jazz. This is a fusion of Jazz and Electronica. Elements of Dub Step, Dub, Third Stream, Techno, Trip-Hop, Hip-Hop Beats, Tape/Sound Loops and Free Form are all present in Nils Petter Molvær's music. Atmospheric is a great descriptor for Nils' musical creations. I always recommend listening to this in the arms of your favorite Green Friend...Get High!! Set back with a glass of wine and a good doobie and drift in the stream of sound.

JustDave's Notes:
- A big thank you goes out to Sam Elliot's Mustache for send his vinyl for encoding.
- As always a big thank you to my fellow members of The Collective Of Live Music for all the help and inspiration.
- Thank You Draftervoi for your fine detective work always finding the proof of date for every Collective Of Live Music release.

Known Flaws:
- As with all King Biscuit shows I've edited so far, the commercials had a marked difference in volume to the music.
- Volume of commercials was adjusted to match the body of the show. This causes excessive needle noise.
- No real vinyl flaws were visually apparent upon inspection. During the initial cleaning process, my record brush brought up the most dust that I have seen on a record in some time. It cleaned up very well visualy but in some small spots if listened for it did cause some fuzz not audible on a casual listen, it has to be listened for.

Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove test tone for setting volume levels and balance before broadcast. This has not been encoded.
- There are 2 locked groove show promos at the end of side A. With Loverboy "Turn Me Loose" as background music: one with a voice over by Bill Minkin, one just music for Local DJ voiceover. These have been encoded and moved to the end of the recording.
- Side A run out groove mistakenly scribed as KB standing for King Biscuit instead of BOB standing for Best Of The Biscuit.

Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LP prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the record prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable & tone arm balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth set: Needle Pressure & Antiskid digitaly set.
- Computer Soundcard stereo field maximized.
- Goldwave set to record while filtering any DC Offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served situation.
- A High Pass Filter with an initial cutoff of 50khz with a Static Steepness of 2 was used to lessen the needle noise during commercials. This needle noise being due to the low volume of the commercials and having to raise said volume to match the music and voiceovers.

Other Notes:
- The Dire Straits portion of the show was first broadcast February 1, 1981 on a King Biscuit Flower Hour split with Thin Lizzy. The show was also broadcast by KSAN-FM California.
- The Loverboy portion of the show was first broadcast April 26, 1981 on a King Biscuit Flower Hour split with Humble Pie.
- Dire Straits rhythm guitarist David Knopfler left the band during the recording sessions for the Making Movies album.
- The song "Eastbound Train" was the B-side to "Sultans Of Swing".
- When I first heard Dire Straits single "Sultans Of Swing" I thought it was a new Bob Dylan track. I called my local radio station to request the song and was informed it was Dire Straits not Bob Dylan. I was also informed that many other people besides me had called in thinking it was Bob Dylan.
- Loverboy bassist Scott Smith died in a boating accident when a large wave washed him overboard off the coast of San Francisco. His body was never found, he was age 45.
- There was no sophomore slump for Loverboy. Their second album Get Lucky was a bigger seller than their first and had more radio "hits" as well.
- I have edited a lot of shows but I have to say that Loverboy's drummer is one of the most solid I have heard. You never hear a stick click or rim hit when he plays a roll and his bass drum foot is really steady and never wavers in power.

Alto Reed was not a touring member of The Silver Bullet Band at the time of these recordings. Broadcast was compiled from 2 prior broadcasts from 1974. The broadcast was sometime in the 1990's. The bootleg was sourced from vinyl, there are some pops present but not distracting. I did run a passive pop/click fix with Goldwave. I bought this CDR bootleg at a small used CD store for $4.00. There was only a printed insert with a track list. I ripped the waves with EAC to run the pop fix and convert to mp3. I had just installed Traders Little Helper so I ran a check on the waves and they came up 100% CDDA so I encoded to flac level 8 instead.

This is a great early Bob Seger show with emphasis on his blues roots. There 4 songs in the set Bob never recorded : J.J Cale's "Bringing It Back From Mexico" , Houndog Taylor's "See Me In The Evening", Albert King's "Don't Burn Down The Bridge" and the Bob Seger Original "Full Circle".

Blue Öyster Cult made the set list for this tour from fan comments on their web site about old songs left out of the sets that they would like to hear. You get "Tattoo Vampire", "I Love The Night", "Golden Age Of Leather", "This Ain't The Summer Of Love" and "Divine Wind" (one of my personal favorites). A lot of Classic B.Ö.C. songs are played so enter the Way Back Machine Blue Öyster Cult fans and smoke one for me during "I Love The Night", Raise Your can of beer on high during "Golden Age Of Leather" and sing out the chorus of "Divine Wind" nice and loud so all can hear you!! To me it's one of those I don't take sh## from anyone songs....

Over 2 hours of Uncut Funk brought to you by the Master Of Maximum Funk Thump Bootsy Collins. Bootsy's pedigree runs deep in Funk and Soul with stints in Parliament-Funkadelic, and James Browns band Th JB's. Bootsy and his brother Phelps "Catfish" Collins put together a band called The Pacemakers. After James Brown's band quit en-mass over a pay dispute The Peacemakers were hired to form a new backing band The JB's or the Original JB's as they are sometimes called. In 1972 Bootsy and Catfish were introduced to Funkmaster George Clinton, they quickly joined forces. After a while Bootsy formed Bootsy's Rubber Band with other members of the P-Funk collective.

This isn't just a Flac Upgrade The MP3 was VBR So t's An Upgrade There Too!

The first thing I want to say about this great sounding set, is that not one performance took place at the California Jam no matter what the title might suggest. That being said, EVERY PERFORMANCE is Soundboard/FM quality, leading me to believe it's a compilation of radio shows. The Who tracks come from one of their King Biscuit Flower Hour appearances. I was told but can't confirm that the Mott The Hoople tracks are from a King Biscuit Flower Hour show. I highly recommend this 3CD set, I mean look at the artist and track list, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, Robin Trower, Leslie West, Peter Townsend, et al one thing the title was correct about is the Guitar Factor!

On offer today for Sunday Morning Jazz is a great Tribute to John Coltrane. This is a really nice sounding show. The performance is top notch of course. See Freddy Hubbard, McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones to me are well know for their talent. Now Sonny Fortune and Reggie Workman are names that I have seen pop up playing with other Jazz Stars I like. With the playing here and on others I have heard I am going to delve into their work some. That's how I became a fan of Arild Andersen, noticing his name and saying now I have to check this guy out on his own. Everyone on this recording plays great. Anyone attempting to play Coltrane arrangements has to play great or it's not going to happen. I think these Gentlemen do a damn good job, You are going to enjoy this one, I just have a feeling...
