You know if Rosebud picks a Jazz show your in for real melodies instead of experimental Jazz. As she has pointed out she's "not into Jazz where it sounds as if every musician on stage is playing a different song" (LOL). Wes Montgomery and The NDR Crew are jamming some great Big Band era influenced Jazz. It's a shame this recording is only 30 minutes long because this is a great rehearsal. That's right this was actually the rehearsal for the show! Wes Montgomery's smooth playing style had to be a big influence on Pat Metheny and countless others in Jazz today.

This is the first Pantera album to feature Philip Anselmo on lead vocals, It also marked a turn towards a heavier sound. Power Metal sounds more like Judas Priest than Def Leppard's On Through The Night, like the Terry Glaze era. The band has continually stated that the early records were just demos, not legitimate album releases. They also continually say they will never see a commercial release. So for all of you Pantera fans who wanted to to here them but couldn't find them, here you go. Power Metal sounds like a natural step between their Cowboys From Hell release and the 3 Glam albums with Terr Glaze. From Power Metal on, the band kept growing more and more heavy till they released one of the heaviest albums to hit The Billboard Charts. Far Beyond Driven was influenced by Death Metal, New Orleans Sludge Swamp Metal, and the Post-Thrash Groove Metal of Exhorder. The fans of both bands to this day go back and forth over who stole who's sound, Ehorder or Pantera. They are both great bands in my humble opinion.
At any rate Power Metal is a damn good album of Judas Priest influences filtered through the American West Coast Hair Metal. Villian's 7 tracks are pretty kick ass too. Their Heavy Metal take on Queen's "Tie Your Mother Down" is worth the download alone.
The Only Time Will Tell EP was the first release by Villain.
Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was murdered on stage December 8, 2004, he was 38.
Pantera drummer "Vinnie Paul" Vincent Paul Abbott died June 22, 2018 from heart disease, he was 54.

Draftervoi's Notes:
Note: the same show was also syndicated on the BBC College Concert #7 with a broadcast date of Oct 24, 1982. That show as hosted by Pete Larkin.
NOTE: I ran across a note on the Internet that there's a King Biscuit Flower Hour show with a broadcast date of February 27, 1983, that has the following songs, attributed to the Fox Warfield Theatre, San Francisco...but they're supposedly IDENTICAL PERFORMANCES to this BBC Rock Hour show.
The songs on that KBFH are supposed to be:
Mental Hopscotch
Words
Tears
Bad Streets
Windows
Walking In L.A.
I Like Boys
Destination Unknown
I don't have a copy of that show, so I can't confirm if this is true.
At the start of "Windows," on this BBC Rock Hour, they announce that the song is from their upcoming album "Spring Session M," "which is going to be released at the end of this month."
"Spring Session M' was released on October 8, 1982 by Capitol Records, and while that's
not "the end of (this) month," it means the show was recorded close to that date. There's a Warfield show up at Wolfgang's Vault attributed to December 28, 1982, which is after the October 10th syndicated broadcast date of this show. My guess is that this show is from Magic Mountain.
The version of "I Like Boys" from this BBC Rock Hour show is up on YouTube, with a supposed date of November 24, 1982....over a month after this show was originally broadcast.

I recently watched a documentary on HBO Max about The Parliament/Funkadelic Collective. I was aware of the drug use of the band or so I thought. What I didn't know was how George Clinton was the main driving force behind it all. George was their Boss & their Cocaine Dealer. When it came to pay day George would ask, "Do You wan't cash or a packet?". A lot took the packet, then when they ran out, George was right there with "credit". He was there Boss so it came right out their pay. You can see where that leads to. George used it to get all the addicted members to sign away their rights to royalties, etc. The thing is George Clinton became just as big a cocaine addict. When he ran out of money for the snow man, he signed away song writing credits, album royalties, publishing rights, the names of the many bands involved. Brides of Funkenstein, Funkadelic, Parliament, The Parliaments, Parlet, everything! Just For Cocaine! That's why ownership of The band names and everything else stays in a constant state of flux. Old cocaine dealers keep coming up with contracts saying they are the legal owner. Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

This is a great recording! The band is in fine form as well, vocals terrific. There is only one bad thing I can say about this recording. I can't remember who shared it at Rockasteria on the chat group! That's it, I wish I could because he deserves many thanks for sharing it! I love this show! I'm listening to it right now!! It's a shame that Poco doesn't receive much airplay on Classic Rock or Country Radio. They are like Pure Prairie League and Atlantic Rhythm Section when it comes to credit for their contributions to Southern Rock/Country Rock. So many of today's paint by numbers, American Idol affected Country Musicians owe these three bands a lot of cash! I won't name any names just in case your a fan of someone I think is, let's say not so good. Don't want to offend anyone (Rosebud is laughing at that statement LOL)

Some New Boots & A Couple New Links
You may notice that this weekends shows were all chosen by Rosebud. I've been kinda busy downloading recordings from a couple sites that I'm pretty addicted to. The sites feature rare pressings of recordings by artists. Some of which are known names and some are a little less on the radar like Sir Lord Baltimore. The sites are like sister sites called Rockasteria and Plain And Fancy. I have added them to my blog list at the left and recommend checking them out. The also have 2 chat boxes on the site one for messages and one for links so people can share their collections. I have joined the chat box and will be sharing some of my own extensive collection.
I deleted some links on the blog list. They were sites that went inactive for a long time or went private. I have more sites in mind for the list but I want to check with the person or persons that run it first.
So 7 new shows posted for everyone to check out. More to come soon!

Sunday Morning Jazz as chosen by Rosebud. She said this about this one.
I picked Jazz artists who I recognized by name and Joshua Redman is definitely one of those. Dave plays him a lot. He even has a special Pandora channel for him...Unlike Dave I don't like what he calls Experimental Jazz...To me it sounds like a bunch of guys playing different songs at once (she says this every time) so there won't be any experimental picks this weekend...This is a very nice show for kicking back and relaxing with a glass of wine and a doobie...

For this postings entry into our History Of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Rosebud chose The Mighty Metal Gods Black Sabbath (Dave bows and flashes the horns) Rosebud had this to say.....
Beside this being the first bootleg Dave ever bought me I picked this because Black Sabbath helped write the book on Heavy Metal....So many bands have been influenced by them. Blue Oytster Cult, Saint Vitus, Candlemass, and even Guns And Roses...Dave read me interviews where B.O.C said they wrote "Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll" to challenge Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" for Heavy Metal Radio Anthem Power...He then demonstrated how the songs riff is the same as Black Sabbath's "The Wizard"...To show me this he played B.O.C. then Rob Hallford's version of "The Wizard" on Nativity In Black. Rob & The Bullring Brummies slowed the song more than it's normally played...It sounds like a heavy cover of "Cities On Flame" (compare them, it's true JD). He then showed me how Guns And Roses slowed down the riff from "Zero The Hero" for the main riff or "Paradise City" (yep true again!)

I kinda forgot about the Out Of Print Live Album series. But Rosebud didn't....She pick one from her CD collection, Bongzilla's limited edition live E.P. (she owns all their CDs).
Bongzilla is one of my favorite Heavy Metal Bands...They play Stoner Sludge Doom, which means they play slow Black Sabbathish riffs, lots of feedback, and more distortion than TV after midnight in the 1970s... All their songs center around the joys of smoking pot, pot culture, and on and on...Their songs also have samples from movies, or speeches with people talking about pot. The vocals sound like the singer is holding a hit or ragged from smoking...Best played loud with a sub woofer on!!

Yep Rosebud picked this weeks entry for Pre-FM Season, she said....
It's simple Pat Benatar was one of the first woman Hard Rock artist to really open up that genre for future ladies...This boot is actually from the days after she change her sound some to fit the MTV era...Dave once told me if not for the style change she might have gone on to be a queen of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal instead of Lita Ford. I agree....
Draftervois Original notes:
Here's a Pat Benatar show from the late 1980s...probably from late 1988, digitized from the syndicated radio show discs.
The vinyl was mint, virtually unplayed, so the sound quality is top-notch. There's a similar (but not identical) show circulating on the Internet as "from the Westwood One Superstars In Concert" attributed to Philadelphia with a date of November 10, 1988...but this differs in several songs. It's likely that WW1 broadcast the show several times but with different running orders, and swapping out several songs. I'm not sure if the date they list for that show is the broadcast date of the syndicated show, or the date of the actual concert, so I'm not listing a date. I also haven't compared the tracks to see if they're from the same source. If you have it, perhaps you can check and post something in the comments?
The Tower Theater is in Upper Darby, a suburb of Philadelphia, so I've listed it with the name of that township.
As usual, I've included scans of the cover, cue sheet, affidavit, and a record label. I've tracked the commercials and the Westwood One breaks so that you can exclude them if you're not interested.
Additional notes:
Myron Grombacher gets no mention in the band introduction at the end "One Love" but I'm pretty sure it must be him.
Considering all available information it should be safe to assume this concert was indeed recorded at the Tower Theater, Upper Darby, PA on November 10, 1988.

Our friend analogkid610 commented that we should have more Uriah Heep on the site. Since Rosebud was in charge of picking shows this week, I told her to pick one out. This is what she said.
Okay so I can't remember all the music Dave exposes me to..the stereo is on like 24-7. I looked through all the files on the hard drives. There are 4 of them hooked up. When I found the right spot, I opened the folder and looked at the end of each of the sub folders looking for SBD, FM, or ExAud and in big letters I see Pre-FM. That's my choice, so I start listening to it and realized I know and really like these guys. Like I said Dave plays so much different stuff it's hard to remember. I gave my list to Dave and he said "Yeah! That one...was just talking about finding it." So there you go....lolol

This time Rosebud picked our post for the Salute To Progressive Rock Bands Series. This is what she had to say about it....
Dave took me to my first Yes show about 2 years after we met. It was a show that focused more on the Radio hits I knew like "Owner Of A Lonely Heart", "Long Distance Runaround" etc. Unfortunately for some reason the sound was off in the theater balcony. You could barely hear and people kept shushing each other. The Next time we saw them was at Pine Knob Amphitheater which is a larger venue. We had like 8th row seats (Dave pulled some strings to get). They opened with a song I never heard before. When they announced the next song Dave said something like "....Yes! Tales" lit a joint and passed it to me. Then said "You're most likely to hear the more Proggy side tonight". He was right they were awesome, I recognized "Roundabout" that was it LOL! On this recording there's a little hum sometimes from amplifiers but the band plays so well and it's not real noticeable when they play.

Okay this is kind of cheating but with this show you get entries into 2 of our running themes right now. I selected this Rush recording to be the next in our Salute To Progressive Rock Bands. I then realized that it is also an entry in our Roots Of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Series. Quite frankly Rush is the biggest influence on the Progressive Metal genre. You could almost say that without Rush there wouldn't be a Dream Theater, Fates Warning etc. As a matter of fact Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater counts Neil Peart as one of if not the greatest influence on his playing. This choice also gives me another chance to say genre purists don't quite accept Rush or any other Progressive Metal band as true Prog since it's Heavy Metal..I also get another chance to say I don't care for purist's rules for music.
This recording is a compilation of the 1978-1979 Tour Of The Hemispheres. Each track was chosen to give the best performance and sound quality representation. I personally love it. This was the 1st tour I seen of Rush's so it's great to get a "Live Album" from that tour.

Nguyên Lê's music has been on this blog a bit, that's because he is such a talented guitarist. This time it's the Nguyên Lê Saiyuki Trio. Though a little different in musical scope this should entertain all that have downloaded his music before. It's a nice blend of Jazz and the music of his Vietnamese heritage.
